Alli: a healthy weight loss pill?
What is Alli?
At Healthynomics, we support healthy weight loss by using natural methods (good nutrition and regular exercise), not through the use of weight loss aids such as Alli.
Alli is the first weight loss pill which has a pharmacy license and will be available for use without a prescription in the UK. Alli is manufactured and marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. Alli is not meant to be taken as a sole means to lose weight. It is a capsule to be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and regular exercise. It is this balance that can lead to sustained healthy weight loss.
How does it work?
Alli works by inhibiting certain enzymes in the digestive tract, which help breakdown fat. In essence, the fat that is normally broken down by these enzymes and absorbed by the body is instead, eliminated through the feces.
Who should use Alli?
Alli is to be taken by individuals that are overweight and over the age of 18. What is considered overweight? Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most commonly used measurement of obesity. To calculate your BMI, take your weight in kilograms and divide by your height in meters squared (kg/m2). The Word Health Organization (WHO) classifies anyone with a BMI equal or greater than 25 to be overweight, however the manufacturer states that Alli is for people with a BMI of ≥ 28.
Any Side Effects?
Some of the possible side effects of Alli, or treatment effects as the manufacturer refers to them as, are:
• Loose stools
• Increased frequency of stools that can be more difficult to control
• Gas
• Oily anal spotting
Vitamin Considerations
The manufacturer states that taking Alli can inhibit the absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E and K). As a result, it is recommended that a multivitamin be taken on a daily basis at a time different to when Alli is taken. This helps ensure that fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies do not develop.
Final Thoughts
It is clear that the Alli weight loss pill alone cannot change your lifestyle nor your body-shape. Alli must be used in combination with healthy lifestyle changes such as improving nutrition and increasing the frequency of exercise for it to have a positive, lasting effect. At Healthynomics however, we believe that there is no quick fix to lose weight. The best method is the natural one, which has no undesirable side effects. Healthy weight loss through regular exercise and eating a balanced diet are the only sure-fire methods. Before starting a diet, taking any nutritional supplement or initiating an exercise programme, it is recommended that you first consult with your physician.
